Mata Ortiz Polychrome Texturized Turtle Design Pottery by Esperanza Tena

 This Mata Ortiz Polychrome Texturized Pottery was handmade by Esperanza Tena. She hand built the clay and then shaped it to its final form. Using natural paints, she completed the intricate designs which showcase turtles and feathers that surround this pottery. An outdoor ground firing (not a kiln) brings this lovely gem to life! It features a long neck and a round opening. The rounded base is poked to form a corrugated pattern that cascades up to the neck. It's 12" tall and about 9" at the widest and is signed. This Mata Ortiz Polychrome Texturized Pottery is a distinctive style that's perfect to display in your home or office!

Esperanza and her husband Eusebio are both talented, contemporary artisans. There are many more Tena's working and living in the Mata Ortiz community and are referenced in Parks "The Miracle of Mata Ortiz", Cahill's "The Story of Casas Grandes Pottery" and Lowell's "The Many Faces of Mata Ortiz".

While most of our silversmiths are Navajo, we employ artists from a wide variety of backgrounds. Some work from home, on the reservation, and some work here in our shop. Alltribes Native American Art and Jewelry blends ancient history, natural beauty, and unparalleled expertise flawlessly. We are conveniently located near Scottsdale, Mesa and Phoenix, AZ in the historic town of Gilbert. Unfortunately, due to Covid and other factors, we are unable to take walk in customers at this time. Our dazzling, Sleeping Beauty Turquoise comes from a nearby mine in Globe, AZ. This unique and exceedingly rare turquoise is renowned for its hardness, durability, and gorgeous color. Our artisans preserve the natural beauty of this precious stone, so you can admire its elegance for years to come. A hand buffed polish protects the stones and heightens its natural beauty.
