Vintage Hopi Salako Taka Kachina Doll

This Vintage Hopi Salako Taka Kachina Doll was handmade by Buddy Dukepoo Tubinaghtewa. He depicts a messenger to the gods, whose departure at the November ceremony is the final prayer for rain to fill the rivers, wells and springs, before summer comes. Using the shape of the cottonwood, the figure is topped by a tableta with eagle feathers, lightning and rain symbolism. Other details include: a turquoise necklace, an eagle feather tunic and a wedding shawl. Pueblo dwellings and symbols of life adorn the lower portion of the body that emerges out of a pottery bowl. It's 14-1/4" tall and 6" at the widest, and is dated 1985 and hallmarked under the base. There's a crack in the back of the bowl but it does not affect its stability. A beautiful piece of Native American art, this Vintage Hopi Salako Taka Kachina Doll is one of a kind!  

Buddy (1962- ) is an award winning carver, who was born in Second Mesa into the Sun Forehead Clan. He has been featured in "Southwest Art Magazine", "Arizona Highways" and "Native Peoples Magazine" and is referenced in Schaaf's "Hopi Katsina 1600 Artist Biographies".
