Vintage Laguna Corn Kachina Doll

This Vintage Laguna Corn Kachina Doll by Laurence Lewis Numkena depicts Morzhivozi, an Uncle to the Corn Dancers. Expertly hand carved and painted cottonwood, he displays a colorful face with rain symbolism, a tube mouth and an eagle feather headdress. He wears a turquoise necklace and leather cape, knee bells and he carries a stick and flower with a fur pelt hanging from his belt. About 13" tall (includes base), 7" wide and 4-3/4" deep, it's signed & named under the base and was professionally restored by Milton Howard. This Vintage Laguna Corn Kachina Doll is a rarely seen carving and it's one of a kind.

Laurence resides in Tuba City, Arizona and we're not sure how he is related to Louran Numkena but a similar style between the two is apparent. He and other family members are referenced in Schaaf's "Hopi Katsina 1600 Artist Biographies".
