Vintage Pottery Zuni Nature Deer Cup by Eileen Yatsattie

Like spotting a deer in the wilderness, this Vintage Zuni Deer Cup is truly a sight to see! Created by Zuni artist Eileen Yatsattie, she hand built this cup using stacked clay coils before smoothing them together to create the shape. She crafted this to be a straight sided cup, with a slight flared bottom, similar in appearance to a small beer stein. She then hand-painted the cup using materials from the Bee Weed plant, adding in painted images of a male deer and female doe along with painted buildings and swirls. It is 6" long by 3-1/16" wide with a 1-3/4" distance from the cup to the handle, signed at the bottom by the artist, and vintage circa 1960's-1970's. Eileen Yatsattie (1960-) has been involved in pottery-making since the age of thirteen, learning from Zuni elder potter Josephine Nahohai, as well as being under the tutelage of late famed Hopi potter Daisy Nampeyo Hooee and late Acoma potter, Jennie Laate. She creates pottery not just for collectors, but also for religious events and purposes such as the Zuni Winter Ceremony.
