Vintage Frog Woman Hopi Pottery
This Vintage Frog Woman Hopi Pottery was handmade by Joy Navasie. She hand built the white kaolin clay in coils, and then shaped, sanded and free-hand painted it. She finished it with an outdoor firing in sheep dung. The traditional, bird wings and moisture graphics are nicely contrasted by the white slip that was stone polished. In very good, used condition with some wear (see photo close-ups) and ca. 1970's. It's 5-1/4" tall and 11-1/4" at the widest and is pictograph hallmarked. This Vintage Frog Woman Hopi Pottery is tradition and talent all wrapped up, in one gorgeous piece of Native American artistry!
Joy (1919-2012) is the second Frog Woman and she learned from her mother, Paqua Naha. She started making pots when she was 17 years old. Her work can be found in numerous books, museums worldwide and some spectacular pieces are featured in the May 1974 Arizona Highways magazine. She is referenced in Schaaf's, "Hopi-Tewa Pottery, 500 Artist Biographies" and Hayes/Blom's "Southwestern Pottery: Anasazi to Zuni", and Dillingham's "Fourteen Families of Pueblo Pottery".
