Vintage Hopi Polychrome Pottery
This Vintage Hopi Polychrome Pottery by Pauline Setalla was acquired in a recent, trade lot. Traditionally made, it was hand built with native clay, decorated in traditional patterns with vegetal paints & sheep dung fired. In structurally, good condition, there is scuffing & paint loss, circa 1950-1960s. It's 7" tall & 9-1/2" wide & is signed & hallmarked. This Vintage Hopi Polychrome Pottery is one of a kind!
Paulene (1930-) was born into the Bear Clan on the Second Mesa village of Mishongnovi. She has been active since 1954 & married into the Frog Woman-Feather Woman family. The Setalla’s pottery is found in a number of prestigious museums, including the Smithsonian, the Peabody and the Heard. She, along with other family members are referenced in Schaaf's "Hopi Tewa Pottery".
