Vintage Pima Large Geometric Hand-Woven Polychrome Basket 

This Vintage Large Geometric Polychrome Basket is a basket big enough to hold all of the character it brings! The weaver of this basket made it using Willow shoots, Martynia (also known as Devil's Claw Seed Pod), and beargrass or cattail. They then age in the sun and use a twining weave technique to tie everything together. The core of the basket is started with a knot that is then weaved around the foundation unto itself. The tradition of basketry was lost on the Pima tribe past the 1920's, as the weavers creating these pieces realized they could earn more money elsewhere; and by the 1960's they had fallen out of basket making all together in favor of commercially made pottery to do the tasks required of them. This large basket is 6-1/8" by 13-3/4", and is vintage circa 1930's and is in good condition with commensurate wear from age. This Vintage Pima Large Geometric Hand-Woven Polychrome Basket is a beautiful representation of the traditions associated with basketry!

While most of our silversmiths are Navajo, we employ artists from a wide variety of backgrounds. Some work from home, on the reservation, and some work here in our shop. Alltribes Native American Art and Jewelry blends ancient history, natural beauty, and unparalleled expertise flawlessly. We are conveniently located near Scottsdale, Mesa and Phoenix, AZ in the historic town of Gilbert. Unfortunately, due to Covid and other factors, we are unable to take walk in customers at this time.
