Large Vintage Hopi Rattle Kachina Doll

This Large Vintage Hopi Rattle Kachina Doll was handmade by Paul Yestewa. He depicts Aya, a rarely carved supernatural, who appears at the Bean Dance and Mixed Kachina Dance. His case mask resembles a dance rattle, and so the name. As a runner, he's in charge of the races, and both rewards and punishes the participants. The traditional cottonwood is beautifully painted and detailed with a colorful body and accessories, that include a fur neck ruff and leather knee ties. About 21" tall including the base, and 9" wide, it's named and hallmarked under the base. This one of kind, Large Vintage Hopi Rattle Kachina Doll is impressive! 

In excellent, used condition, this came to us from a personal collection of katsina, that were well-cared for and displayed under glass. Although there is no additional info on the maker, he is referenced in Schaaf's "Hopi Katsina 1600 Artist Biographies".
