Vintage Hopi Farmer Kachina Doll

This Vintage Hopi Farmer Kachina Doll was handmade by Willis Kewanwytewa. This supernatural appears with Soyoke, the Ogre Woman. This cottonwood carving has lots of details that include: colorful cloud symbolism on his cheeks, rainbow eyebrows, feathers and yarn. His turquoise case mask represents the color of the west, and he wears a green neck ruff and has red tab ears, he holds a gourd rattle and knife to harvest corn. About 10" tall (includes base) and 5" wide. There is a hand written paper glued to the bottom attributing this to Willis; the former owners' mother purchased this in the late 1960's. This is in very good, used condition. This Vintage Hopi Farmer Kachina Doll is one of a kind!

Willis (1924- ) was born in Oraibi to the Short Corn Clan and has been carving since the 1940's. He learned from his father, Jimmy K and his style is similar. He is referenced in Schaaf's "Hopi Katsina: 1600 Artist Biographies".
