Vintage Hopi Tewa Spider Pattern Pottery

This Vintage Hopi Tewa Spider Pattern Pottery was handmade by "Spider Man" Burl Naha. This whiteware features his signature image of using a spider, a symbol that first peaked his interest, when his daughter Cynthia came home from school with a sticker of this symbol of Pueblo lore! The hand painted polychrome creatures are attached to webs and display moisture patterns on their abdomens. Additional rain, lightning, tail feathers and crop patterns pack the lower half.  This pottery was acquired from a private collector who has been collecting one of a kind Native American items for over 50 years.  It's about 4" tall and 8-1/2" at the widest and is in excellent, used condition. It's pictograph hallmarked, by hand, with a feather and a Longhair Kachina. This Vintage Tewa Hopi Spider Pattern Pottery is a unique work of Pueblo art, and a highly collectible art piece that will enhance any home or office that you display it in! 

 Burel (1944-  ) was born into the Hopi-Tewa Spider Clan and is the son of Helen Naha (Feather Woman). Grandson of Paqua Naha (Frog Woman), brother of Rainy and Sylvia Naha, he is also the nephew of Joy Navasie. He received his BA at Brigham Young University and was a teacher for many years, but now has dedicated his life to the traditional ways of his ancestors. He is referenced in Schiffer's "Pueblo Pottery Families", Hayes/Blom's "Southwestern Pottery", Dillingham's "fourteen Families in Pueblo Pottery" and Schaaf's "Hopi Tewa Pottery".
