Vintage Large Antique Pima Two-Tone Man in Maze Basket 17" Wide

This Vintage Large Antique Pima Two-Tone Man in Maze Basket measures 17" Wide and a depth of 5". This traditional Pima basket is a beautiful representation of people that truly respect the environment they are surrounded by and live in. This basket features the design of the traditional Man in the Maze pattern. This pattern is one of the most recognizable of Native American history and culture, specific to the Pima Nation. The Man in the Main design is a visual representation of life, death and the life after death. This Vintage Antique Pima Basket was created with the care and craftsmanship of a special generation of weavers.

The weaver likely made this traditional woven basket over a number of hours, as traditionally weaved baskets, jars, and trays were very time consuming and the gathering of materials had to be done at a certain time of the year. The tradition of basketry was lost on the Pima tribe past the 1920's, as the weavers creating these pieces realized they could earn more money elsewhere; and by the 1960's they had fallen out of basket making all together in favor of commercially made pottery to do the tasks required of them, making these items antique anywhere from the 1880's to the 1920's. To this day the younger generation are bringing basket making back, eager to learn their culture and preserve their identity. This jar is approximately 17" in circumference and depth 5", and in good condition overall. This Vintage Large Antique Pima Two-Tone Man in Maze Basket is Southwest stunning and rich in history!
